Lloyds of London have announced an alcohol ban for employees during working 9-5 hours. Boozy lunches have long been the norm in the City for many businesses when deals are made with customers. For some employees, this may come as a bit of a shock, especially if they are used to the occasional daytime tipple. Lloyds have defended their reasoning saying it’s time to bring the company and employee expectations into line with ‘industry norms’. Not every business and industry has the same lenient outlook to daytime drinking during the week and expect professional behaviour at all times, even on visits out of the office.
A Lloyd’s spokesman has said that one of the reasons behind the ban is that they want to attract younger people to the industry (although this may not be the best-selling point to the younger generation…).
However, the ban may spark a movement that could be adopted by more companies, and therefore mean needing to attract workforces who are fiercely focused and have a strong, professional work ethic during all working hours, leaving the drinking and fun strictly to the weekend. But how can you tell if someone is reliable, dedicated, productive, co-operative, positive and honest before you offer them a job? In other words, how can you guarantee a strong work ethic?
One way of ensuring you hire employees who are going to fit this criterion, is by getting them to complete a personality test. Skillsarena’s Character DNA profiling tool gives you a comprehensive description of a candidate’s personality type, so you can see whether they would fit in well with your company culture. Completed online, participants grade sets of words to identify traits which describe their personalities.
The profile analyses four elements of personality; introversion, extraversion, thinking and feeling. These are represented by colours; blue, green, red and yellow. Most people are predominantly one colour, which they will revert to when comfortable or under pressure, which gives a clear picture of personality and communication style.
Character DNA is a highly valuable tool to use during the recruitment process, and could be extremely useful for workplaces of the future, to ensure the candidates you’re hiring are likely to adhere to workplace rules.
