In the Skillsarena team, we love a challenge. So much so that for the past month Lauren and Natalie have been searching for an event for everyone to take part in (one that everyone agrees on!) to fundraise for FOP Friends. FOP Friends is a charity close to our hearts as Oliver – an honorary member of the Skillsarena Team has Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). He is 6 years old and the condition means that one day his muscles and other connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments will turn to bone. It’s one of the rarest and most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine. The condition is so rare, it’s virtually unknown and there’s even less commercial interest in finding a cure.
We all wanted to do something to raise money for the charity, as we do most years. Trying to find a date we were all free, and an event we could all agree on (that wouldn’t require too much training) was just the start of the challenge! After disagreements over tough mudder (‘do you know how far that is?!’) tough mudder half (‘do you know how far that still is?!’) many Googles later we found one we all wanted to do. We wanted something that was going to require a bit of work and effort, but was still going to be fun, and this sounded perfect. We decided on Gung-Ho! which is a 5K obstacle course with 10 inflatable obstacles to overcome and the pictures look so much fun! We were sold.
We booked it the next day, as I was googling for the website I noticed the first thing that comes up is a translation of the word, which I felt to be very fitting. ‘Enthusiastic’ or ‘Overzealous’ is Gung-Ho in English, which I like to think the team are! The Chinese symbols that the word originates from also individually mean ‘work’ and ‘together’ which we all do effectively everyday, and are going to need to do to get around the course, by the looks of things!
