Spelling Assessment

Everything you need to know.

Use our Spelling Test to gain an understanding of your applicants' ability using written English, to measure their skill with words and to gauge their ability to express themselves correctly on the page. Spelling is a crucial part of any organisation's presentation and communication, so being able to test spelling abilities of your candidates and existing employees is paramount.

Three different levels of the test are available and are used to test various levels of spelling ability. These quiz levels are FundamentalCore and Professional. The higher levels will assess the ability to learn new words, but they will also expand on spelling covered by previous levels, calling on a more advanced knowledge of the English language.

What is the Spelling Test?

Our Spelling Test is a quiz designed to assess a test-taker's ability to spell effectively and to recognise the correct British spelling of a word when written on a page.

As part of the Spelling Test, questions will be presented in a multiple choice style. The difficulty through Core and Professional levels is increased by the rarity of the word being spelled and the legibility of the incorrect options available on the list.

Candidates will be presented with a list of 30 spelling questions to complete within 15 minutes. The candidate’s responses are automatically marked and a point is awarded for each correctly answered question. Skipped words or questions that are not taken will result in no point being awarded for spelling.

Who is the Spelling Test aimed at?

No matter whether your current or potential employees are native or non-native speakers, they need to have a firm grasp of how to effectively express themselves through written communication and have a strong understanding of English grammar. The Spelling Test that we offer is not role-specific. Instead, it is aimed at any employee whose job function involves communicating with others in British English on a daily basis.

Why use a Spelling Test?

Identify areas for improvement

Spelling is important in many jobs which require a good level of literacy. Pre-employment spelling assessments are therefore a crucial way for employers to narrow their pool of applicants in order to select those best suited to the role.

The Spelling Test offered by Skillsarena is incredibly helpful to employers in that it provides them a way of learning more about their applicants' level of skill in spelling words, something that is hugely important to many roles and crucial in creating a sense of professionalism in an organisation.

A text in which words have typos, spelling mistakes or errors is understandably considered unprofessional, therefore all employees must have a basic level of literacy. Spelling Tests are therefore the perfect way to identify areas for improvement in employees and to better understand the spelling level of candidates applying for your roles.
