Health &  Safety Signs and Symbols Test

Everything you need to know.

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 sets out a series of occupational health regulations for the workplace which must be adhered to at all times in order to maintain a safe working environment. A fundamental part of any health and safety training, regardless of what level you're at, is being able to identify and understand the meaning of common hazard warnings, safety signs and symbols. As such, we have created an assessment in which a thorough knowledge of common warning signs, safety signs and emergency symbols is a fundamental requirement in order to score highly. Thus allowing you to accurately assess the level of skill your candidates possess when it comes to keeping themselves and others safe.

What is The Health & Safety Signs and Symbols Test?

This assessment has been designed to test an individual’s ability to recognise and understand international health and safety symbology including hazard warning signs, Mandatory signs and Prohibition signs. Candidates are presented with questions in a variety of styles including matching descriptions to images and multiple-choice questions.

There are 30 questions in total in the question pool, however, candidates are given 15 minutes to answer 15 randomised questions. Their responses are automatically marked and a point is awarded for each correctly answered question. For any question where multiple answers are required, the sum of these answers will result in one point being awarded for the question. Skipped questions or those that are not answered will result in no point being awarded.

Practice tests are available for candidates to familiarise themselves with the assessment process or use as studying material.

Skills Measured

01 Practical Judgement

Our test centre examines your candidates' ability to effectively deal with an emergency by utilising their practical judgement skills. This may involve being able to apply accurate first aid, respond appropriately to danger warnings, utilise effective precautions, or have a practical understanding of safety signs around the workplace and beyond.

02 Hazard Awareness

The ability to rapidly and accurately identify potential hazards, risks and dangers in one's environment is an essential element of good health and safety skills. Through having an awareness and understanding of common signs depicting potential health and safety hazards, such as signs warning of corrosive or flammable materials, you can feel more confident that your candidate has reliable health and safety skills.

03 Safeguarding Awareness

Whether it's wearing PPE or knowing how to rapidly minimise the risk of an environmental hazard, knowing the meaning of various safety signs is a fundamental factor in maintaining high-quality safeguarding awareness.

Why Use a Health & Safety Signs and Symbols Test?

Enhance Workplace Safety

In 2020/21, there were 142 fatal (an increase of 29 on the previous year) and 51,211 non-fatal (employer-reported) injuries in UK workplaces. Considering that many employees were working home during this time due to COVID-19, these are staggering and frightening statistics. When you consider how many injuries could have been prevented - and lives saved - if a health and safety signs test such as ours had been regularly used, it's not hard to see why a test like ours is a vital addition to your business.

Legal Obligation

In line with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, providing health and safety training is a legal requirement for any employer. As part of this, employees should have a thorough awareness and understanding of common safety signs as well as specific signs suitable for their workplace.

Avoid Penalties and Enforcements

Breaching the regulations set out by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 can result in hefty fines, enforcements and, in severe cases, imprisonment. This is enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and/or your local authority who can assess your business' level of health and safety at any time.

Maintain Staff Skills

Ensuring that your team are thoroughly trained in health and safety is one of the most effective ways of ensuring safety in your workplace. Keeping staff regularly trained can keep them and others safe and avoid potentially life-threatening accidents and injuries.
